"The present problems we face cannot be solved by the level of thinking that created them".....Albert Einstein

The members of the Engelhardt Lab at the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology welcome you to our web site.We are a diverse group from the far corners of the world, gathered here among the corn fields of Iowa to learn, teach and perform research. You will learn as you journey through our pages that our research, though wide-ranging, is centered on developing approaches for gene therapy of human diseases. Our research spans genetic and metabolic diseases from cystic fibrosis, organ transplantation and sepsis, to cardiac ischemia. We invite you to explore these pages to learn more about gene therapy and about us as individuals. Along the way, we hope you will learn to share our excitement about this field of research.

Gene Therapy Technology Licensed To Targeted Genetics
The University of Iowa Research Foundation has granted Targeted Genetics Corporation of Seattle a license to use certain gene therapy technologies developed at the UI. The agreement provides Targeted Genetics Corporation with access to technological developments from the laboratory of John Engelhardt, Ph.D., a UI Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology and Internal Medicine, and Director of the UI Center for Gene Therapy of Cystic Fibrosis and Other Genetic Diseases. Research is focused on finding new uses for adeno-associated virus (AAV) as a vector for gene therapy. Targeted Genetics Corporation has also entered into a sponsored research agreement with the UI that will result in funding for ongoing AAV research in the Engelhardt laboratory. Full Story...
